A Taste of Autumn: Our New À La Carte Menu
The days may be getting darker but our new à la carte menu is sure to brighten your autumn evenings, featuring a range of wholesome dishes that deliver on our commitment to bringing a taste of the countryside to the heart of the city.
Sit back, relax and kickstart your memorable meal by ordering some mouthwatering nibbles to whet your appetite. Our Muscade Pumpkin & Old Winchester Croustades are a real treat, topped with a moreish caramelised onion ‘jam’ and crunchy toasted seeds. For those who enjoy a bit of adventure, our Gamekeeper’s Haggis Bon Bons are a must-try. These crispy morsels pack a flavourful punch, served with a zesty green peppercorn and tarragon sauce that cuts through the richness of the haggis. The accompanying root vegetable crisps add a satisfying crunch to every bite.
As you move to starters, the Smoked ‘Great Glen’ Venison Loin stands out as a true celebration of the season. The delicate smokiness of the venison pairs beautifully with creamy Yorkshire Blue cheese, while smoked almonds and poached pear add contrasting textures and flavours. Seafood enthusiasts will appreciate our ‘Escabeche’ Of North Sea Mackerel. This dish highlights the quality of our local catch, complemented by sweet ‘n’ sour vegetables, a dollop of dill cultured cream, and a crisp sourdough ‘wafer’.
Our main courses continue to showcase the best of autumn’s bounty. The Smoked Bacon & Sage Wrapped Yorkshire Pheasant Breast is a testament to the richness of game season. The succulent pheasant is enhanced by smoky bacon and aromatic sage, served with a hearty leg ‘au vin’, button onions, York ham, and king oyster mushroom. All this sits atop a velvety smoked pomme purée, creating a dish that’s pure comfort on a plate.
For those who prefer beef, our Marmite Glazed Ox Cheek offers a unique twist on a classic. The tender ox cheek, slow-cooked to perfection, gets a savoury boost from a Marmite glaze. It’s accompanied by creamy hot mustard potatoes, a rich beef fat carrot, and pickled red onion to cut through the richness. The addition of toasted yeast brings an extra dimension of flavour, enhancing the dish’s umami notes.
We’ve not forgotten our vegetarian and vegan diners. Our Autumn Root & Pearl Barley Risotto is a hearty and satisfying option that celebrates seasonal vegetables. The creamy barley is studded with a medley of autumn roots and wilted brassicas, topped with crispy Yorkshire Pecorino ‘crackling’ and salted cracked hazelnuts.
To finish your meal on a sweet note, our dessert menu offers some truly indulgent options. The Pumpkin ‘Pie’ is a sophisticated take on the classic dessert, featuring a torched Italian meringue, refreshing orange sorbet, and candied peel. For a different kind of comfort, try our Nutmeg Baked Custard. This silky custard is served with a warmly spiced apple compote and salted caramel ice cream, all complemented by a crisp brandy snap.
New Group Menu: Autumn Gatherings Made Easy
Coinciding with the launch of our new à la carte menu, we’re also excited to announce the arrival of our new group menu, which is perfect for parties of six or more. This fab option similarly captures the essence of autumn and offers the perfect excuse for a long-awaited get-together.
Our group menu allows patrons to select three courses from a carefully curated selection, featuring some of our new à la carte favourites alongside specially crafted dishes. You’ll find autumn-inspired options like our Pan Fried Seabass with Pumpkin & Sage Ravioli, a dish that beautifully marries the last of summer’s seafood with autumn’s comforting flavours.
To make your gathering even more special, we’re treating group diners to a glass of fizz on arrival. It’s the perfect way to kick off your evening and set the tone for a fantastic meal ahead.
Whether you’re planning a birthday celebration, toasting an anniversary, or organising a pre-Christmas get-together, our group menu offers a hassle-free way to enjoy great food in good company. And if you’re looking for something even more exclusive, don’t forget to explore our private dining options here.
Perfect Pairings: Our Wine Selection
At The Star Inn The City, we believe that the right wine can elevate a great meal to an unforgettable dining experience. That’s why we’ve put as much care and attention into our wine list as we have our food menu.
Our in-house sommeliers have worked tirelessly to ensure that each dish on our new à la carte menu has a recommended wine pairing. These pairings have been carefully selected to complement and enhance the flavours of each dish, creating a harmonious balance that will delight your palate.
For instance, if you opt for our smoked Venison Loin starter, you might find it paired with a velvety New Zealand Pinot Noir. The wine’s delicate fruit notes and subtle earthiness perfectly complement the smoky, gamey flavours of the venison. Or, if you choose our Marmite Glazed Ox Cheek for your main, you could see it matched with a robust Argentinian Malbec. The wine’s full body and rich fruit stand up beautifully to the intense flavours of the dish.
But don’t worry if you’re not a wine expert – our knowledgeable staff are always on hand to guide you through our selections.
Raise a Glass: Our Drinks Selection
While our new autumn à la carte menu may be stealing the spotlight, our drinks list remains a star in its own right. We’ve curated an impressive selection of beverages to complement your meal, with something to suit every palate.
For beer lovers, we offer a range of draft options that are sure to hit the spot. Whether you’re in the mood for a crisp, refreshing Pilsner or fancy trying something a bit different, we’ve got you covered. Why not sample one of our locally brewed ales? These unique brews capture the essence of Yorkshire in a glass and pair beautifully with many of our autumnal creations.
Our commitment to all things local extends to our spirits collection too. Settle in with a glass of York Gin, a smooth and aromatic spirit that showcases the best of local distilling. For a truly indulgent after-dinner treat, we recommend the Spirit of Yorkshire cream liqueur; this velvety digestif is the perfect way to round off your meal.
If you’re in the mood for celebration (or just fancy a bit of fizz), our champagne and prosecco selection won’t disappoint. From crisp, dry varieties to softer, fruitier options, we have bubbles to suit every occasion and taste.
Finally, cocktail lovers will find plenty to enjoy on our cocktail menu. We offer a range of classic concoctions alongside our own signature creations, each mixed to perfection by our skilled bar team. Can’t see your favourite on the list? Just ask – our mixologists love a challenge and will do their best to whip up your preferred tipple.
