Christmas in York is set to be even more magical this year thanks to the launch of ‘The Winter Hütte’, a pop-up, two-storey traditional Swiss chalet that will take pride of place at York Christmas Market.
Offering York residents and visitors the chance to experience ‘Swiss with a twist’ dining, the upper floor of The Winter Hütte will serve as the spectacular setting for Michelin-starred chef Andrew Pern’s latest exciting restaurant: The Star Inn The Winter Hütte.
The charming wooden chalet, which will officially open on November 17th, will also comprise an outdoor drinks terrace, a fully licensed bar on the ground floor serving seasonal favourites such as hot chocolate and gluhwein, whilst a gourmet sausage stall will also cater for patrons and passers-by looking for a festive snack.
‘A Real Experience For All The Senses This Christmas’
Andrew Pern is one of Yorkshire’s most celebrated chefs and throughout his long and illustrious career he has developed an unrivalled reputation for bringing amazing restaurants and food to Yorkshire. In the mid-90s Andrew purchased the 14th Century thatched Star Inn at Harome before transforming it into one of the first Michelin starred Gastropubs in the world.
Consistent with his commitment to serving up exquisite seasonal dishes that showcase the very best local ingredients, in recent times Andrew has also achieved success with The Star Inn The Harbour in his hometown Whitby and in 2013 Andrew opened the AA-rosette winning Star Inn The City which is located in the grounds of York’s museum gardens.
Andrew’s latest venture is inspired by his love of the alpine life and the menu at The Star Inn The Hütte encapsulates all the flavours and fun associated with après ski life.
Commenting on what diners can expect to find on The Star Inn The Winter Hütte’s exciting menu, Andrew said: “As well as the traditional fondue and raclette, the menu will include off-piste specials such as pheasant with smoked garlic, baked tartiflette with reblochon cheese and creamy wild chestnut mushrooms, and peppers & mountain spices with alpine ‘spätzle’ dumplings. In the downstairs apres-ski bar we will be serving a range of Yorkshire gourmet sausages from “The Dog Haus” to enjoy with a festive beverage, while passers-by can also grab a tasty bite from the window counter. Together with the scent of pine and decor of mountain scenes and cow bells, The Winter Hütte will be a real experience for all the senses this Christmas.”
‘Something Truly Special This Christmas’
The Winter Hütte is a joint venture between Coopers Marquees, CMJ Events and Andrew Pern.
Combined, the team boasts over 60 years of live entertainment and food knowledge experience which has enabled them to deliver this spectacular event which arrives just in time to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of St Nicholas Fair, a highlight in the York events calendar.
Ahead of the November launch Johnny Cooper, of York-based Coopers Marquees, shed some insight on how the project came to life. He said: “The wooden Swiss Chalet concept was born a couple of years ago following a desire to build something new and exciting for York. Adding the second floor to the offering brings a new dimension that has never been seen before and the theming, detail and food and drink offering will make it authentic and give York something truly special this Christmas. The Winter Hütte‘s cosy alpine décor, cow bells and mountains of cheese will have you yodelling through the streets of York!”
