The Old Engine House: Our Historic Setting
As you navigate the virtual streets surrounding our restaurant, take a moment to appreciate the majestic architecture of the Old Engine House: the place we call home. This extraordinary Grade II listed building has roots tracing back to the late 18th century. Originally designed to house the waterworks pump engine, this architectural gem has stood the test of time and has witnessed the incredible evolution of York’s city centre landscape.
In 2013, a transformative chapter unfolded as Michelin-starred Chef Andrew Pern took the reins, breathing new life into the once-sleepy, yet charming, building. With a visionary spirit, Andrew set out to create a 130-seater restaurant within its historic walls. His goal was to fashion a stylish and inviting space, a food-led celebration destination that could enchant patrons all year round. Thus, The Star Inn The City was born.
