York Christmas Markets (14th November-22nd December)
Once again, the heart of York transforms into a bustling Christmas market that would make even Santa himself jealous! The York Christmas Markets, centred around Parliament Street and St. Sampson’s Square, offers an enchanting experience that’s sure to get you in the holiday spirit.
As you wander through the market, you’ll find dozens traditional wooden chalets adorned with twinkling lights and festive decorations. Each stall is brimming with unique gifts, handcrafted items, and local delicacies that make perfect presents for loved ones or treats for yourself.
Artisanal food producers offer a tantalising array of Yorkshire specialities, from locally produced cheeses and chutneys to freshly baked goods and sweet treats. You’ll also find an impressive selection of handmade crafts, including jewellery, ceramics, textiles, and wooden toys.

One of the highlights of this festive experience is the chance to meet the traditional Green Father Christmas, who wanders the streets spreading Christmas cheer. This portrayal of Father Christmas, clad in a long green robe, offers a fascinating glimpse into how our modern Santa Claus evolved from earlier traditions.
On selected dates, visitors can also enjoy performances by a very convincing Scrooge, bringing Charles Dickens’ famous character to life and reminding all of us about the true spirit of Christmas. Further, the museum offers children’s decoration-making workshops whilst Victorian carol singers can be heard throughout the museum, filling the air with traditional Christmas melodies.
Christmas Shopping in York
York is a shopper’s paradise during the festive season, offering a diverse range of unique gifts and treats. Visit The Shambles, with its charming timber-framed buildings, or explore Coppergate Shopping Centre for a more contemporary shopping experience. The high street is lined with an array of jewellers and favourite brands, ensuring you’ll find the perfect present. All aboard this festive season as York City Cruises is offering a unique and magical Santa Experience that combines the beauty of York’s riverside with the excitement of meeting Father Christmas.
This Christmas-themed cruise takes you along the iconic River Ouse, offering a different perspective on some of York’s most famous sites. As you glide past historic buildings and under ancient bridges, you’ll be treated to festive music and decorations that transform the boat into a floating winter wonderland.
The star of the show, of course, is Santa himself, who takes time out of his busy schedule to meet with all the children on board. His jolly helpers are on hand to ensure everyone has a magical time, leading Christmas games and activities throughout the journey.
The cruise departs from an area very close to the Lendal Bridge, conveniently located right next to The Star Inn The City.
Festive Theatre Shows (November-December, Selected Dates)
The festive season in York wouldn’t be complete without the magic of live theatre, and 2024 promises a spectacular lineup that will delight audiences of all ages.
The Grand Opera House takes centre stage with two enchanting productions. From 7th December 2024-5th January 2025, the beloved fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast” comes to life in a dazzling pantomime, promising a feast of vibrant costumes, catchy tunes, and plenty of laughs for the whole family. Earlier in the season, from 22nd -30th November, the same venue hosts “Nativity! The Musical”, a heartwarming adaptation of the popular film series that’s sure to fill you with Christmas cheer as you follow the adventures of a group of primary school children putting on their annual nativity play.
Not to be outdone, York Theatre Royal presents its own festive treat with “Aladdin”, running from 3rd December 2024 -5th January 2025. This traditional pantomime, a beloved York institution, invites audiences to join Aladdin on his magical journey, complete with stunning sets, outrageous costumes, and the essential ingredient: audience participation!
