As one of York’s most popular and accomplished fine dining restaurants, here at The Star Inn The City we believe that exceptional food demands exceptional wine and that’s why our expert team of inhouse sommeliers suggest wines that complement every dish on our menus superbly.
Paying great levels of attention to combine weights and match flavour profiles, we consistently hand-pick a selection of delicious vintages sourced from some of the world’s most prestigious wine-producing nations.
From delicate, citrusy and refreshing whites, to intense, aromatic and velvety reds, here’s a little insight into some of our suggested food and wine pairings from the current All Day Menu.
Starter Pairings
To complement our succulent selection of starters, the sommeliers at the Star Inn The City have devised some sublime pairings.
If you opt for our delectable Pressed Ham Knuckle & Flat Parsley Terrine to start, we suggest accompanying it with a glass, or bottle, of refreshing Albillo & Moravia Ulterior Naranja which derives from the famed Verum Tomelloso vineyards in Spain. This refreshing and balanced white, which boasts citrus notes of orange, grapefruit and apple, is unctuous on the palate and has an increasing acidity that reaches its maximum expression in the aftertaste together with the ripe fruit character.
If you’d like to begin your culinary journey at The Star Inn The City by trying our Pan Seared Scottish Sea Scallop we suggest sampling a glass of Gewurztraminer from Jean Biecher Alsace, France alongside. The Biecher family have been making wine in Alsace since 1776 and are committed to responsible winemaking from vineyard to cellar. This full-bodied white is intense and complex, offering an explosion of exotic fruits (lychee, passion fruit, pineapple, mango), flowers (notably rose), citrus (orange peel) and spices (gingerbread, peppermint, cloves and pepper).
Finally, we recommend accompanying our mouth-watering Salt-Aged Yorkshire Beef ‘Tartare’ with a glass of Frescho from Howards Folly, Portugal. Produced on the granite foothills on the mountains of North East Alentejano, this vibrant red boasts lifted aromas of wild berries and fresh cherries. In the mouth, the wine is lighter than the nose suggests and driven by red fruits – raspberries, pomegranate and with a cranberry juice grip. This red also works perfectly with our delicious Thyme Roasted Breasts of Rievaulx Shot Partridge main.
Main Pairings
The Star Inn The City’s lovingly crafted dishes utilize the freshest seasonal produce sourced from the local Yorkshire countryside. In order to accentuate and complement these top-quality ingredients we’ve selected an incredible range of reds and whites that work exceptionally well with our mains.
Tempted to order our scrumptious Cider Braised Escrick Pork Belly with Pancetta & Cabbage Choucroute, Spiced Bramley Apple, Crackling and Black Treacle Juices? We recommend enjoying this with a glass of quality Zensa Nero D’Avola. This delicious Sicilian red boasts a great depth of fruit and intense flavours. On the palate it is powerful and intense, yet approachable. It’s also extremely velvety and smooth with a long and persistent finish.
Eager to try our popular Pan Roasted Loin of North Sea Cod? Enjoy this divine fish dish with a light and refreshing sip of Picpoul de Pine. This incredible French white features delicate hints of citrus, green apple and acacia blossom and promises a crisp, lively finish which is just perfect with seafood.
If our incredible chargrilled 10oz Salt-Aged Yorkshire Reared Sirloin Steak has caught your eye, and you’re searching for the ideal wine accompaniment, we recommend trying a glass, or bottle, of Vistalba Corte C, an intense red with purple hues deriving from Mendoza, Argentina. The Vistalba winery is renowned for their unique harvest, fermentation, ageing and bottling process, which gives this red a sweet entrance on the palate and evokes notes of Bing cherries, dry fruits, and almond.
Dessert Pairings
From reimagined childhood classics and puddings that showcase the best local fruit in season, to rich and velvety slices of cake and luscious ice cream, we’ve got a decadent dessert waiting for you.
Our inhouse sommeliers have also conjured up some expert dessert wines and spirits that are guaranteed to elevate your pud.
Order a slice of our delectable Baked White Chocolate with Vanilla Custard and we recommend washing it down with a glass of Pasitto di Noto from Sicily. This award-winning sweet wine is characterised by explosive aromas of exotic fruit, jasmine and citrus fruit and works incredibly well with chocolate and vanilla.
Not to overlook any turophiles, try our incredible Selection of Three Cheeses from Near & Far, and enjoy these tasty bites of fromage alongside Quinta do Valado 10 YO Tawny Port. This irresistible Port boasts rich nutty, dried fruit aromas whilst luscious, sweet raisin and mocha chocolate hints are evoked on the palate.
